About the organisation

Our client is a leading Dutch organisation and a market leader in a specialized niche of the railway technology sector. From 13 international offices, where approximately 150 employees are active worldwide, the company serves clients across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America.

In recent years, the organization has invested heavily in corporate social responsibility, sustainable product and system development (including circular and bio-based materials), and enhancing knowledge sharing. It also actively pursues local production and sustainable logistics to further reduce its carbon footprint.

As the Sustainability Specialist, you will be part of the international Health, Safety, Environment & Quality (HSEQ) team a small, close-knit team operating across all entities.

What will you do as a Sustainability Specialist?

In this newly created international role, you will take the lead in shaping the organization's sustainability ambitions. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining sustainability policies across the entire group.

With your expertise and strong influencing skills, you will drive initiatives that deliver real impact. You will work closely with local managers, external suppliers, and regulatory authorities, playing a key role in strengthening the organization’s value chain responsibility.

Your main tasks will include:

  • Policy & Reporting: preparing Life Cycle Assessments (LCA's) and Product Carbon Declarations (PCD's) for products; coordinating sustainability reporting (including CSRD and GHG);
  • Ambitions & Objectives: developing concrete sustainability ambitions and measurable objectives; contributing to ISO 14001 processes and broader environmental policies;
  • Compliance & Evaluation: conducting Ecovadis assessments (including gap analyses and documentation); managing environmental permits; liaising with regulatory authorities;
  • Training & Advice: delivering (online) training and awareness sessions; advising international entities and external production partners on sustainability topics;
  • Monitoring & Improvement: keeping abreast of sustainability trends and translating them into actionable policies; independently managing projects and conducting internal audits.

What do you bring

You are a self-starter with a proactive mindset and strong communication skills. You know how to inspire others and drive positive change in the field of sustainability.

You also bring:

  • at least 4-5 years of relevant work experience in sustainability, environmental management, or a comparable field;
  • a relevant degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, or a similar discipline;
  • demonstrable knowledge of and experience with European environmental and sustainability legislation; familiarity with these topics outside the EU is an asset.
  • expertise in sustainability reporting (LCA, PCD, GHG) and ISO 14001;
  • experience with sustainability reporting software;
  • preferably experience in auditing and/or delivering training;
  • excellent command of written and spoken English; Dutch and/or German is an advantage.

What the organisation offers

A highly independent and dynamic role with ample room for your ideas and initiatives, within an international environment where sustainability is a strategic priority.

In addition, you can expect:

  • a competitive salary;
  • laptop and phone;
  • pension scheme and bike lease scheme;
  • 27 days of annual leave (based on a full-time contract);
  • extensive opportunities for professional development via the company's own Academy;
  • a strong focus on mental wellbeing and vitality (including fresh fruit at the office);
  • hybrid working model with home office equipment and IT support provided;
  • the opportunity to make a visible contribution to the sustainable transformation of global infrastructure.
